Let me tell you something: the outdoors has always been integral to my life. As a kid I was the opposite of a couch potato. My Mom would have to literally drag me inside for all meals and for bedtime because all I wanted to do was camp outside.
To this day, that is still what I want to do, and it surprises a lot of people because in fact, I work in the city as a stockbroker. So how does someone who loves the country and loves the outdoors become a stockbroker? Well, it is just something I was incredibly good at and took a liking too. To be honest, it was quite difficult for me to make the decision to move to the city in order to work.
I was going to have to be out of the country and in an environment I really didn’t enjoy. For all of you who are reading this, do you truly enjoy the city? So much hustle and bustle on the streets, with cars honking and people yelling and trying to cram onto the subway! Even just thinking about it makes me tired.
My Discovery
For my first few months in the city, it really bogged me down. I will be completely honest; there were so many times I came close to quitting just because I despised the city so much. My boss at work realized something was really wrong, as I did not have the same gusto I did when I started the job months ago.
I explained to him my situation and my love of the outdoors. He asked if I had a car, I said yes. He asked if I had done any exploring around the outskirts of the city, and I said I didn’t have much interest or time.
He told me to take the rest of the day off and gave me a map with a circle on it. He said, “You drive to that circle. It is only 30 minutes outside of the city. Then tomorrow you can come back with a clear head and ready to work.” I listened to my boss and hopped in the car. What came next really astounded me.
I drove only 30 minutes and found myself at some sort of haven. It was a park, but not just any park; one that was filled with trees and a ravine flowing through it. There were kayaks to rent, and wildlife everywhere. I felt like I was in a dream. I just laid on the grass and cried, this is just what I needed!
Fishing Rods
Since that moment, I have been constantly fishing in that place every single week. It has given me exactly what I needed and I feel more calm and relaxed. I now actually enjoy the city and can commit more wholeheartedly to doing my job.
Now, I am very knowledgeable about the fishing industry and want to share some of what I found with you. I hope through this you can learn more about fishing and what you need to get started. First and foremost, you need a great fishing rod. I am going to go into the various types of fishing rods that you can buy in the hopes that you will eventually buy one that suits your needs.
Types Of Fishing Rods
The most common fishing rods that you will find today are casting rods, light lures and spinning rods. Each of these fishing rods are unique and will benefit various types of skills that you may have. If you have never fished before and want a great selection that won’t let you down, I recommend buying a 6’6″ and 7′ medium or medium heavy casting rods.
These types of rods are found to be extremely helpful, especially for a beginner, and this is what I started out using. Most of the time, a huge factor in buying a fishing rod comes down to how much money you will be willing to spend. I always tell beginners not to spend too much money because you may not even know if you like the whole sport of fishing yet.
Conclusion
It always brings me so much joy when I hear about someone trying fishing for the first time! I wish you all the best out on the water!
